The Increasing Face of Sleep Disorders in America

The magnitude of sleep disorders is so high that just in America there is an approximate 60 to 80 million people who suffer from it and the cases are on the rise. One such reason for increase in number of cases can be owed to the higher percentage of people in the elderly age group apart from other factors like obesity and problems associated with lifestyle.

There are many other contributory factors too like heredity, illness, stress and working at night that can add up to increasing incidence of sleep disorders.

There are in all over hundred types of sleep disorders known to medical science and the symptoms vary from being very minor to being fatal. Sleep disorders can occur among people of any age group beginning right from infancy to the very old.

As the incidence and prevalence of sleep disorders are on the rise, so is the related hazards from them.

The fatigue initiated by sleep disorders reduces the mental alertness of the individual and the reaction time. This kind of a combination can be very risky especially for people who perform activities like driving. Drivers of transport vehicles might be experiencing sleep disorders without them realizing it and can cause accidents. People with sleep disorders tend to have more accidents both at their residence as well as when they are at work. Owing to problems like increased accidents and many illnesses that arise from sleep disorders has lead to the U.S. Government as well as the general public spending huge sums of money to the tune of billions of dollars.

Many different problems can arise when the person suffers from sleep deprivation of which some of them include joint pains, headache and stomach upset. Sleeping disorder can also lead to serious problems like lung disorders, cardiac disease as well as diabetes. The wellbeing of the mind of people with sleeping disorders also gets affected due to the condition from which they suffer. This can in turn lead to problems like anxiety, depression, eating disorders and mood swings.

Many people will not take sleeping problems seriously and report it to their doctor as they do not realize that the problem is very grave and needs management. They might visit the doctor for other symptoms or illnesses that it might be related to their sleeping problem but they will not realize that the sleeping problem is the root cause for their other issues.

This has helped in the correct management of the condition through various methods like CPAP, oxygen, medication and in some cases treated with surgical procedures too.  Even the tests and screening procedures have far improved than what it was earlier leading to arriving at the correct diagnosis. Even the conditions of overnight sleep study centers have undergone a drastic change and they look more like any room in a hotel rather than looking like a hospital that helps in providing more ease to the patients. The advent of technology has even brought the testing to the person’s residence where tests can be conducted.

Sleep is not something that only lazy people need but is one of the basic requirements to having a healthy body and mind. If there is a chance that you suspect that you or your partner or any of your family members are having a sleep disorder, it is best to seek medical help at the earliest. You should realize that sleeping disorders are medical conditions that require management without which the condition might aggravate and cause unwanted complications.
