People who are suffering from insomnia for a long period of time should take a call on whether they would prefer to be on a sleep medication or not. Although antihistamines are primarily used in the treatment of allergies it is also helpful in the cases of insomnia. But, their use in long term and factors like safety and efficiency has not been properly studied.
The prescription medicines that are available to help reduce symptoms of insomnia fall into one of the four major types of medications namely antidepressants, barbiturates, benzodiazepine receptor agonists and melatonin receptor agonists. Each has a different type of effect in people suffering from insomnia and careful consideration needs to be taken before putting a person on any of these medicines to help overcome chronic insomnia.
Before opting for any of these medications, it is essential to find out the cause for the person’s insomnia. If the person is experiencing insomnia secondary to any illness or other medications they are having, it is important to try and treat or eliminate the primary cause for the insomnia. Once the primary cause is eliminated or successfully treated, the insomnia will gradually disappear on its own without undertaking any specific treatment.
People suffering from chronic insomnia should take the help of their doctor to decide on whether to take sleep medicines or not but finally it is for them to take the final decision. People will be able to make a more informed decision if they make extra efforts to become thoroughly educated about the condition and the pros and cons of taking the sleep medication over a long period of time.
