Insomnia – Why is it such a Popular Condition?

Insomnia has achieved high amount of popularity and knowledge about the condition owing to its presence in many books and in movies. The best known examples can be the use of this condition in the book named Insomnia that is authored by the novelist by name Stephen King and a movie by name Taxi Driver that featured Robert De Niro in the year 1976.

There are also many songs that have the theme of Insomnia of which a few popular ones are those of Green Day, Radio head, Tenacious D and Vanessa Carlton. Fight Club is another famous movie that used this theme which was based on the novel that was authored by Chuck Palahniuk and had actors like Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. The condition has often found its way into films, books and songs as this is a very common problem affecting a majority of the population.

Many people who suffer from this problem do not understand the gravity of the situation. Sleep deprivation is not healthy as it can have adverse effects on the immune system and increasing the likelihood of developing illnesses and infections. Also, the ability of the body to recuperate goes down that can possibly lead to problems like disorientation.

Insomnia was a source of encouragement for many coffee movements to bring in a chain of coffee shops like Caribou Coffee, Gloria Jeans, Seattle’s Best and Starbucks as many people who had to stay up late like those working in hospital or people studying late at night needed to remain awake. People who could not manage to remain awake just by consuming coffee could opt to take an over the counter tablet known as Vivarin that provides caffeine equivalent to consuming around two cups of coffee.

Taking Vivarin on a regular basis is not recommendable as it can have profound effects on the body’s capacity to rest while asleep. This can cause other type of problems like falling sick very often as the person is not getting adequate rest for the body to recuperate thus affecting the immune system. Not having adequate sleep also has an adverse effect on the digestive system. Therefore, it is very essential to provide the necessary amount of rest coupled with taking naps during the day to help in keeping the energy levels optimum rather than trying to boost the body by consuming pills of caffeine or coffee.

People who often try to stay awake by consuming caffeine pills or coffee often develop resistance to respond at a particular level of caffeine causing them to feel exhausted. This can in turn lead to a reversal where in the consumption of caffeine will not help the person in staying awake but it will increase the pace at which they begin to feel drowsy.

No other disease or condition has become so popularized through mediums like books, songs or movies like Insomnia. For this reason, many people are aware of the condition and are also influenced by it.
